Nut splitters that break the nut, not the thread

Facom Keep On Rolling

A nut splitter breaks a seized nut open instead of turning it off. You slide the ring over the nut, tighten the hardened chisel with a spanner and split the nut over its full height, without touching the bolt or the stud. That is the advantage over cutting or burning it off: no sparks, no heat in the structure and no damaged thread that has to be replaced afterwards anyway. It is therefore also the method for areas where no hot work is allowed.

Choose on across-flats size. The range here runs from around 10 to 50 mm, split into overlapping sizes, so work out first which nuts you meet in maintenance and cover that range with two or three tools rather than with a single one.

Put a socket or a ring spanner on the drive and tighten evenly, because shock loading is what breaks a chisel. Kukko, Facom, Gedore and Bahco supply mechanical versions for maintenance and dismantling work. The wider range of other miscellaneous tools sits one level up.
