Shell end mills for facing and edge milling

A shell end mill is a cylindrical cutter that slides onto an arbor and cuts on its periphery as well as on its face. That lets you machine a flat surface and the adjoining edge in a single setup, which suits facing castings, bringing steel sections to size and milling slots with a square corner.

The range is built in HSS-E, alloyed with cobalt for longer tool life at higher cutting speeds and in tougher material. Match the type to the operation: coarse toothed type N takes material away fast, fine toothed type H leaves a more accurate finish, and type W is intended for aluminium and other non-ferrous metals. Roughing versions belong to preparatory work, where chip volume weighs heavier than surface quality.

Then set diameter and width against the arbor and the power of the machine. A 160 mm cutter demands considerably more drive torque than a 40 mm one, and too heavy a cutter on a light machine gives chatter and a poor surface. Alongside the shell end mills, milling also holds the disc cutter, the choice once you need narrow, deep slots.
