The peak season for activities in the garden is almost over, but ornamental gardens or vegetable gardens still require lots of work in the fall. The months after the summer is the best time to seed typical fall colors such as peonies, violets and asters to brighten up the garden, and there are many options in the vegetable garden in the fall and winter too. Below you will find some tips on what to plant or seed in September.
Flowers for the ornamental garden
Peonies

Peonies are incredibly beautiful in bloom and will look great in any garden. These stunning perennials do best when planted in the fall and then flower next spring. They are perfect for placing in a vase once you have trimmed it nicely with rose gatherer pruner scissors.
Tip: Make sure the plant gets enough sunlight and don’t plant them too deep.
Violets
Available in every color of the rainbow, this annual plant looks exceptional in window boxes and the ornamental garden. Violets are perfect for the fall as they can survive colder temperatures in winter and also withstand frost.
Tip: Remove the spent and dead flowers so that the rest will bloom better.
Asters

This plant works in many places, such as window boxes, rock gardens or flower gardens. Asters thrive in climates with cool, humid summers and chilly nighttime temperatures. Therefore, September is the best month to seed asters.
Tip: Make sure asters get a lot of sunlight and water them daily with watering can or garden hose, but be careful, they don’t like too much water.
Vegetables for the vegetable garden
Spinach
Since this type of crop grows rapidly, it can be grown in September because the spinach plant likes cooler temperatures. It only needs about six weeks to grow and the plant can withstand cold temperatures easily.
Tip: Sow spinach seed ¼ inch deep and 1 inch apart.
Radish

Also, Radishes can be consumed after less than a month as they take very little time to grow. The radish plant is a hardy, very easy-to-grow root vegetable that can be planted or sown several times a year. Hence, Radish seeds can be sown both in the spring and in the fall.
Tip: Keep the seeds moist while you wait for them to germinate.
Kale
Kale is an unyielding crop that thrives in the autumn and winter seasons. If we get a cold winter this year, it will bring out a nutty flavor of this highly nutritious leafy vegetable once you get it on your plate in the spring of 2021.
Tip: Kale will grow slowly during the winter but will speed up once spring arrives.
