Combination spanner sets for assembly and maintenance

A combination spanner set pairs a closed ring and an open jaw on every spanner, so assembly and dismantling do not send you back to the box for other tools. The ring end surrounds the bolt completely and takes the highest torque without rounding the corners of the head. The open end slides sideways onto a nut that cannot be reached from above, on a pipe run or against a flange.

The common sets cover ranges such as 7 to 19 mm, 8 to 19 mm and 7 to 24 mm, with individual sizes running up to 32 mm and beyond for heavier bolts in machine building, transport and steel construction.

Check three things when choosing: the size range, whether the spanners carry a ratchet or a fixed ring, and the packaging. A holder with a clamping spring works in the service van, while a steel box protects better at a fixed workplace. A ratchet version with a small return angle wins time where you can barely move the spanner. If you only need closed rings, a ring spanner set is the better buy, and for hex and Torx work a pin key set fills the gap.
