Cutting oil and thread cutting oil for metalworking
Cutting oil cools and lubricates the cutting zone during drilling, tapping and thread cutting, so your tools heat up less, stay sharp longer and the machined surface comes out smoother. Without lubrication, drills and taps seize sooner, the material discolours through heat and the chance of thread breakage rises, certainly in stainless steel and other tough metals.
The right product depends on the operation and the material: mineral-oil-based oil with EP (extreme pressure) additives is there for heavy machining, while chlorine and silicone-free variants suit work where you finish or weld afterwards. You will find cutting oil as a liquid for the workbench and as an aerosol or spray to apply precisely at the cutting point.
Look at the viscosity, the suitability for your metal type and the packaging that fits your method. Brands such as CRC, Ridgid, Phantom and HiKOKI supply cutting oil for a range of applications. Choose a cutting oil that matches the material you machine and the way you apply it, so your tools stay protected and cut cleaner.
