Batteries for site tools, torches and instruments

Facom Keep On Rolling

Choosing a battery starts with the load, not the label. A smoke alarm, a torque wrench display and a site torch draw current in completely different patterns, and a cell that suits one drains fast in another. Disposable cells in 1.5V AA and AAA sizes remain the sensible fit for instruments that sit idle for months, because self-discharge is low and a flat cell is swapped in seconds anywhere on site.

Rechargeable lithium-ion cells at 3.7V and nickel-metal-hydride packs at 6V make sense the other way round, where a device runs hard every day and the cost per cycle beats the cost per cell. Capacity is quoted in mAh, and a higher figure means longer runtime at the same drain, not more brightness or more torque. Check polarity, terminal type and physical length before ordering a replacement pack, since a nominally identical cell can be a couple of millimetres longer and refuse to seat.

Chargers and charging cradles for the rechargeable formats sit in the batteries and battery chargers range.
