Hand planes for trimming, fitting and finishing
A block plane is the small, low-angle hand plane used one-handed for trimming end grain, easing an edge and fitting a joint that is a shaving too tight. Its low bed angle slices across fibres that would tear out under a steeper iron, which is why it stays in the apron pocket while larger planes wait on the bench. Longer bench planes work the other way: a sole of 245 mm up to 560 mm bridges the hollows in a board and takes it genuinely flat instead of following the surface it started with.
Choose by sole length against the work first, then by iron width, which sets how much material each pass removes. A cast body holds its flatness over years, an adjustable mouth controls shaving thickness on figured timber, and lateral adjustment keeps the cut even across the full width. Sharpening does more for the result than any figure on the box, so budget for a honing setup.
Part of the wider planes range, a block plane complements a full-size plane rather than replacing it.
