Bolt cutters and compact cutters by cutting capacity

A bolt cutter converts arm travel into enough jaw force to shear hardened round stock in one clean bite. Two figures decide the tool: the maximum diameter and the hardness class it is rated for. Cutting well inside that rating keeps the jaws keen, while forcing the tool through hardened stock at the top of its range rolls the cutting edge and ends its working life early.

Handle length drives leverage, so compact models around 200 mm work one-handed inside switchgear cabinets and reinforcement cages, and 600 to 900 mm handles take rebar, padlocks and heavy chain at ground level. Look for induction-hardened, replaceable jaws, an adjustable pivot to restore the cut as they wear, and multi-component grips that stay put in a wet hand.

Jaw geometry follows the task: centre cut for general work, end cut for shearing flush against a face. Part of the wider scissors and cutting range, alongside tin snips for sheet and cable cutters for stranded conductors.
