Connecting links to close a roller chain

A connecting link turns a roller chain cut to length into a closed loop. You push the pins through the last two links, fit the side plate and secure it with a clip or a split pin. That is the only point where the chain opens and closes without a press, and the first thing to check during maintenance.

Size comes before everything. The link has to match the pitch of the chain exactly, along with the roller width and the number of strands: a simplex chain takes a single link, duplex a double one. Pitches of 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1" are the most common in drives and conveyors. A link from the wrong series sometimes fits physically, but it does not carry the tensile load and fails under it.

Then choose the version to suit the environment. Plain steel is enough in a dry drive, while stainless steel belongs in food processing, outdoor installations and wet processes. RENOLD offers both in the same size series, so a link can be matched to a chain already in service. On a repair, replace the neighbouring links too if the chain has stretched, because a new link in a worn chain wears fast. Complete chains cut to length sit under chains.
