Devices for compressed air: compressors with a tank

A compressor supplies the air that a nailer, a spray gun, a tyre inflator and pneumatic tools run on. These devices range from compact cordless units on 18V, 36V and 54V to mains machines with a tank of their own.

Start from the working pressure your tools ask for. 8 bar covers most hand tools, while 10 and 11 bar leave margin for spraying and for long hose runs where pressure drops. Then look at the flow in litres per minute, because that decides whether the compressor keeps up or has to stop and refill. Tank capacity absorbs the peaks: a few litres is enough for short jobs, more volume is needed as soon as you work continuously.

Oil-free machines need no oil level check and deliver clean air, which counts for spray work and anywhere oil mist must not reach the product. Quiet versions are the logical choice indoors and on sites with neighbours. Cordless compressors win on mobility, and pay for it with a limited run time per charge. Power runs from around 900 W for light work to 2200 W for heavier duty. Under compressors and freeze dryers you will also find the freeze dryer that takes condensate out of the air line.
