Wooden dowels and dowel sticks for wood joints

Dowels are the consumable part of a wood joint: wooden pins that enlarge the glue area and hold the parts in place while they are clamped. They take shear load in cabinet carcasses, framing, doors and chair joints, and they let a joint be aligned without visible screws or hardware.

Two timbers are common. Beech is hard and dimensionally stable and swells in a controlled way once it takes up glue, which strengthens the grip in the hole. Sipo stands up better to moisture and is therefore the choice for external doors, windows and garden furniture. Look at the surface as well: grooves or ribs let excess glue escape, so the dowel seats fully instead of stopping halfway down.

Choose on diameter and on length. Smaller sizes work in thin sheet material and mouldings, thicker and longer dowels belong in solid parts and load-bearing frames, and a length around 30 mm to 40 mm covers most cabinet work. Flat Domino tenons are cut to a machine-specific width, so match the tenon to the cutter it is used with. Dowel sticks are bought by the stick and cut down yourself. Other fixings sit under wood joints.
