Soldering tips and spare points for soldering irons

A soldering tip is the replaceable point that carries the heat of the soldering iron into the joint. The shape decides where that heat ends up. A straight point works accurately on small contacts, a bent point keeps the joint in view when working inside a housing, and a wide point gives the contact area you need for thicker wire and solid solder pads. Choose the tip for the job rather than out of habit.

When replacing one, check the fit first. A soldering tip only fits the iron it was made for, so check the iron type before ordering. The range runs from around 1 mm for fine electronics work up to 5 mm for heavier joints. Heavy duty points hold their shape longer under sustained use at high temperature, while fine points oxidise faster and so need replacing more often.

Bahco, Facom, Expert and Dremel supply loose points and tip sets for their own soldering irons. For irons, stands and other soldering supplies, look one level up at accessories and spare parts.
