Feeler gauges for setting clearances and running gaps

A feeler gauge measures the clearance between two faces by trial: the right blade slides through with slight drag, the next one up will not enter. Blade thicknesses here start at 0.03 mm and step up to 1 mm, which covers valve clearances, bearing end float, guide rails, brake gaps and the shimming work that follows a rebuild. Blade length decides where the tool reaches, so keep a short set for open work and a 150 or 200 mm set for anything recessed behind a housing.

Tip shape is the second choice: a rounded tip enters a tapered gap without catching, while a pointed blade slips into narrow slots where a full-width blade jams. Treat the blades as precision stock. Wipe them dry, keep them lightly oiled against corrosion, and retire any blade that is kinked or worn thin, because a stretched blade reads high and that error carries straight into the setting.

For dimensional work beyond clearances, a micrometer in the analogue measuring instruments range gives resolution a blade set cannot.
