Filters for half and full face respirator masks

The filter is what makes a reusable mask fit the hazard, and it is chosen from the substance in the air rather than from the mask already on the shelf. Particle filters are graded P1, P2 and P3, with P3 the class specified for fine dust, fibres, welding fume and biological aerosol. Gas and vapour cartridges are graded by letter: A for organic solvents, B for inorganic gases, E for acid gases, K for ammonia and Hg where mercury vapour is present.

Combination cartridges carry both a gas class and a particle class, which is what spraying, resin work and much maintenance actually needs. Class 1 and class 2 differ in absorption capacity, not in protection level, so the higher number buys working time rather than a lower leak. Confirm the mounting system before ordering, because bayonet and thread patterns are not interchangeable between makes.

Replace on smell, taste or rising breathing resistance, and store unused cartridges sealed. Keep a spare filter cover and filter holder with the mask so a damaged part never stops the job.
