Foot protection starts with the protection class. S1 covers a closed heel area with an antistatic sole, S3 adds penetration resistance and a water repellent upper, which makes it the usual choice on building sites and in heavy industry. Anyone working indoors on a firm dry surface can drop to a lighter class and gain in wearing comfort.

After that the working environment decides the design. A low shoe is more agile and runs cooler, while a half-high model supports the ankle on uneven ground and keeps grit out. ESD shoes conduct static charge away in a controlled way and are the norm for assembly work on electronics. Where floors are wet or chemically loaded, weigh the sole pattern and the slip rating carefully.
