Helmets, face shields and hoods for the shop floor

Head protection starts with the helmet, and the fit decides whether it stays on. A shell that spreads the impact and an internal harness that absorbs the energy only do their job when the helmet sits properly, so a rotary knob in the headband that adjusts the size in a second, gloves on, is worth more than any specification sheet.

Ventilation is the first trade-off. Vent holes make a real difference in warm work, but they disappear as soon as electrical insulation is required, since helmets rated to 440V or 1000V are closed shells. Decide which of the two the workplace actually calls for, rather than buying the more comfortable one by default.

Beyond the plain helmet there are versions with an integrated face shield, which keeps eye protection on the head instead of in a pocket, and helmets built to carry a powered air supply for work in dust or fume. For hygiene work and for wear under a helmet there are disposable hoods with an elastic band around neck and face. The rest of the head and face protection sits one level up.
