Impact sockets for powered impact work

An impact socket takes the hammering of an impact wrench without cracking. The difference with a hand socket is in the steel and the wall thickness. An impact socket is made of a tougher alloy steel that absorbs the shock load instead of passing it on, while a chrome plated hand socket shatters under that same load. Never use hand sockets on pneumatic or cordless impact tools.

Choose the drive first. 1/2" is the common size for maintenance on vehicles and machines, while heavier dismantling work calls for a larger square drive. Length comes next. A short socket gives the stiffest transfer, a long or deep version reaches nuts on protruding studs and recessed bolts. For light alloy wheels there are reinforced versions with a protective sleeve that leaves the rim unmarked.

The range runs from small across-flats sizes for fine bolt work up to generous sizes for structural bolts, in hexagon and with deep variants, from Bahco, Facom, Gedore, Milwaukee, Makita, HiKOKI and Wera among others. Hand sockets, ratchets and adaptors for the same work sit one level up under sockets.
