Master links for chain slings and lifting gear

A master link forms the attachment point of a chain sling. It is the link that goes over the hook of the crane or hoist and gathers the load from the legs below it, so it carries the full load of the assembly. The choice starts with the grade. Grade 10 belongs with high-grade steel chain systems and carries more at the same diameter, while grade 6 in stainless AISI 316 is used where corrosion is the real problem, in food processing, outdoor storage and wet production areas.

Look as well at the number of legs. A version for a 3 and 4 leg assembly is made to take three or four chain legs, and that sets the opening and the shape of the link. Diameters run from 6 mm to 20 mm, and that size has to suit the chain of the sling and the hook opening of the lifting gear. Never mix components from different grades: the weakest part sets the working load of the whole.

At each inspection, check for deformation and wear in the contact face with the hook. For textile lifting gear, look at round sling.
