Blind riveters and rivet nut pliers

A rivet gun sets blind rivets from one side, with no access to the back of the workpiece. You pull the mandrel until it snaps, the rivet expands and clamps the parts together. That makes it a standard technique in sheet metal, bodywork, cladding, ducting and machine building, wherever welding or a through bolt is not an option.

Choose on rivet diameter first. Hand pliers cover the everyday sizes; heavier lever and two-hand models take larger rivets and handle steel and stainless as well. Handle length decides how much force you supply yourself: a short tool works comfortably in a tight space, a long lever pulls thicker rivets through without effort.

For rivet nuts, use a rivet nut tool with interchangeable mandrels and a ratchet or lever mechanism, which gives you a full thread in thin sheet. Check which thread sizes a given tool covers before you commit to it.

Look at the mandrel catcher and at the nosepieces supplied, because a tool without the matching nosepiece deforms the rivet head. For other sheet metal tools look at seaming pliers or at pliers.
