File, rasp and scraper sets in one holder

A set puts several filing tools in one holder rather than loose pieces, so nothing has to be hunted down mid-job. File sets combine flat, half-round, round and three-square shapes, so surfaces, radii, bores and internal corners are finished in the same operation. Rasp and scraper sets do the same for coarse removal in wood and for pulling paint and adhesive residue off a surface.

The cut decides the result. A bastard cut takes material away fast, a second cut brings the shape to size and a smooth cut does the final finish. Workshop assortments come with handles fitted, which steers better and works more safely than a bare tang.

Length is the other thing to check. Shorter tools of 100 to 160 mm are meant for fine work, small openings and model work, while 200 to 300 mm gives more stroke and leaves a straighter cut on larger surfaces.

Loose tools sit alongside, under rasps and scrapers. Store them dry and apart, because tools lying against each other blunt their own cut.
