Spherical roller bearings for heavy radial load

A spherical roller bearing takes heavy radial load and tolerates misalignment between shaft and housing at the same time. That makes this type the standard in vibrating screens, rollers, conveyors and drives, wherever the shaft deflects under load or the foundation does not stay perfectly flat. The barrel-shaped rollers run in a spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring can follow the shaft without the rollers running skewed and loading the edges of the track.

Three things decide the choice. The bore is cylindrical or tapered: a tapered bore is mounted on a plain shaft with an adapter or withdrawal sleeve, a cylindrical bore goes straight onto the seat. Radial internal clearance has to suit the fit and the operating temperature, because a bearing that runs hot loses clearance and starts to bind. The cage design then helps set the maximum speed. At assembly, work clean and heat the inner ring evenly, never locally with a flame.

Check the shaft seat for size and roundness first. For lighter and purely radial duty, look at deep groove ball bearing and cylindrical roller bearing.
