Steel wool grades for surface finishing and preparation
Steel wool is one of the most versatile surface preparation materials available, handling everything from delicate finishing work to aggressive rust removal depending on the grade selected. Ultra fine grade 0000 is used for buffing wax coats on furniture, polishing metal surfaces to a mirror sheen and smoothing final lacquer coats without leaving visible scratches.
Very fine grade 000 handles light cleaning tasks, removing tarnish from brass fittings and preparing surfaces between finish coats. Fine grade 00 steps up to cleaning paint spatters from glass, removing light surface rust and scuffing primers for better topcoat adhesion. Medium grade 0 tackles heavier work: stripping old finishes, cleaning heavily oxidised metal and preparing raw surfaces for painting or oiling.
All packs contain 1000 grams of material, providing enough volume for professional-scale projects without frequent restocking. The continuous strand construction of quality steel wool ensures consistent cut across the entire surface, avoiding the uneven scratching that occurs with lower-grade alternatives. When choosing a grade, start finer than you think necessary and step up only if the material is not cutting fast enough, as it is always easier to switch to a coarser grade than to repair scratches left by starting too aggressively.
