V-belts for machine drives

A v-belt transmits torque through its flanks in the groove of the pulley, not through its underside. That wedging action gives grip without the belt having to run tight, which limits bearing load and makes the drive quieter than a chain. You find v-belts in fans, compressors, pumps, woodworking machines and agricultural equipment.

The profile decides the choice. Classical profiles are wider and flatter; narrow profiles such as SPB carry more power at the same section height and take up less room in the drive. Cogged versions bend more easily around small pulleys and run cooler, which extends life at high speeds. Watch the length designation as well, because Li is the inside length and Ld the datum length, and the two differ by profile.

When replacing, measure the profile and the length of the old belt, and on a multiple drive always replace all the belts together. A new belt beside old ones takes most of the load on its own. Then check pulley alignment and tension. Other belt types sit under belts.
