TIG welding rods chosen on alloy and diameter
A welding rod is the filler you feed into the weld pool by hand during TIG welding, while the tungsten electrode carries the arc. Because you dose the rod yourself, you decide how much material goes in on each pass. That is what makes TIG the method for thin sheet, pipework, repairs and visible welds that get no finishing afterwards.
Alloy is the first choice and it follows the parent material. For stainless steel of type 316 you take a rod in the ER316LSi class, where the raised silicon content makes the pool flow better and leaves a flatter bead. Unalloyed steel calls for a different class, so check the material certificate of the workpiece before choosing the rod.
Diameter and length follow. Thin rods of around 1.0 to 1.6 mm belong to sheet work and root runs, while rods of 2.4 mm and up suit fill runs and heavier sections. Rod lengths run here from 300 to 1000 mm. ESAB supplies the rods by alloy and by diameter, so note both before you order. Keep them dry and free of grease and do not handle them with bare hands, because grease and moisture give porosity in the weld. Wire, electrodes and other filler material sit one level up.
