Zinc paint, zinc spray and zinc primer

Zinc paint restores the cathodic protection of galvanised steel where the zinc layer has gone: weld seams, drilled holes, saw cuts and transport damage. The zinc in the coating corrodes in preference to the steel underneath, so rusting stops rather than being covered over. That makes cold galvanising a standard part of assembly work on fencing, steel structures, pipe brackets and body panels.

Choose on zinc content and on finish. A product with a high zinc content is meant as a protective layer and as a bonding primer under a topcoat, while an aluminium-bearing zinc spray also leaves a light grey colour that stays close to hot-dip galvanised material. That difference matters most on visible work, where a dull grey repair patch stands out immediately. Aerosols work fast on small areas and reach places a brush cannot.

Adhesion stands or falls on preparation: brush or abrade back to bare metal, degrease the surface and build up thinly in several coats. Related products sit under filling compound and damp-proofing.
