The wide side slits are definitely an advantage for ventilation. In fact, they prevent heat from accumulating inside the shoe and create a bacteria-friendly moist biotope. If you are used to Velcro fasteners, the lacing system with the thin strings scores points for a better fit, but it is also very easy to use.
