Cup brushes for steel and weld seams

A cup brush takes rust, mill scale, paint and weld slag off steel without grinding the surface away. The wires stand outward in a cup, so the pressure falls evenly across a wide face and the brush keeps working on hollow parts and inside fillet welds.

Two things decide the choice: the wire and the fitting. Crimped wire works more gently and is meant for light rust and paint residue. Twisted wire is more aggressive and lasts longer on weld seams and heavy mill scale. The thicker the wire, the coarser the finish it leaves, so match it to the work rather than to the machine. On the fitting side, angle grinders take an M14 or M10 internal thread, while brushes for drills come on a 6 mm shank.

Choose the brush diameter, from 50 mm to 130 mm, to suit the machine and not the workpiece. An oversized cup on a light tool drops out of its speed range, cleans worse and wears faster. On flat surfaces a fibre disc or a sanding roll is usually quicker.
