Machine taps for through holes and blind holes

Facom Keep On Rolling

A machine tap cuts internal thread under machine drive, in a tapping machine, a pillar drill or a machining centre. Unlike hand tapping you run the thread in one pass, so the sizing stays more consistent and the work goes considerably faster. Lead-in and chip clearance decide the quality of the thread.

Choose on hole type first. For a through hole, take a machine tap that pushes the chip forward and out of the hole ahead of the tap. For a blind hole, take a version that carries the chip back out behind it, so the bottom of the hole stays clear and the tap does not jam. Then comes the material, because HSS-E with cobalt holds up in tough and stainless steel where plain HSS blunts too quickly.

Watch the standard and the thread form as well. DIN 371 and its related standards fix the shank dimensions, so the tap fits existing quick-change holders, and beside metric thread there are versions for BSP gas thread.

For external thread use a thread cutting die; the full group sits under threading.
