Taps, dies and die heads for cutting screw thread

Threading is cutting a screw thread into or onto material with a tap, a die or a die head. Internal thread is cut with a tap in a pre-drilled hole, external thread with a die or a die head over a shaft or a pipe. Sizing follows DIN, so a nut or a coupling from another supplier fits without adjustment.

The choice starts with the workpiece. Machine taps in HSS-E turn in a drilling machine or a machining centre and are meant for continuous work in steel and stainless steel. Hand taps work in stages and are the right choice for single holes, repairs and cleaning up damaged thread. For pipe thread you use universal dies in a self-opening die head, which opens at the end of the stroke so you never have to wind back.

Watch the tapping drill size, because it decides whether the thread carries fully or ends up too weak. Always cut with cutting fluid and break the chip regularly, since running dry costs more taps than any other mistake. Brands such as Phantom, International Tools, Ridgid, Facom, Bahco and Milwaukee cover both machine work and hand work. For sizing holes afterwards reaming sits alongside, and the full cutting tools range is one level up.
