Hexagonal die nuts for external thread
A die nut cuts external thread on bar, tube or bolt, and does it by hand. The hexagonal outside fits an ordinary open-ended or socket spanner, so you can start a thread in a tight space or on the installation itself. That makes the tool most valuable in repair work, where a damaged thread end has to run freely again without stripping the assembly. International Tools supplies the broad metric and pipe thread programme in HSS, alongside versions from Milwaukee and Phantom.
Choose the thread form first. Metric to DIN 382 belongs with ordinary bolt and bar work, BSP with pipe thread on pipework, and the two are not interchangeable. Then check the diameter of the starting material, because bar that is too thick binds and tears off the first turns. Start the die nut square, cut with oil and back off a quarter turn regularly to break the chip.
HSS takes higher cutting speeds than carbon steel and stays sharp longer on tough material. For internal thread, look at machine tap, and for cutting with a die stock at thread cutting die.
