Lever hoists with a ratchet handle

A ratchet hoist lifts, pulls and tensions on a short lever stroke, including where there is no room to crank. The ratchet works in both directions and the free-wheel lets the chain run out quickly, so the load is hooked up in seconds instead of wound out metre by metre.

Unlike a hand chain hoist, a ratchet hoist is not tied to the vertical. Pulling horizontally, working at an angle or bringing a structure up to tension all work equally well, which is what makes it common in installation, recovery work and aligning heavy sections.

Choose on working load limit and on the lifting height you need, and keep margin on both. Overload protection stops the hoist being loaded past its capacity, and where several people share one workplace that is not a luxury. Check the hooks as well, since a safety latch belongs on them as standard. Periodic inspection runs to fixed intervals; in between, check the chain for stretch, nicks and corrosion.

For balancing hand tools a spring balancer fits better, and for picking up steel plate a lifting magnet.
