Mechanical vacuum lifters with one or more pistons

A vacuum lifter grips a load with suction instead of clamps or straps. As long as the surface is smooth and airtight the pad holds without anything biting into the material. That makes it the method of choice for work where scratches, dents and clamp marks are not acceptable, on smooth sheet and panel material.

A mechanical lifter builds the vacuum with a hand-operated piston pump, so it works anywhere, including places with no power at the workface. Check the pad and the state of the sealing lip before every lift, because that is what carries the load, and a nick in the rubber shows up as a slow leak rather than an obvious fault.

The number of pistons is the second choice. More pistons spread the load over a larger area and limit the sag of thin, flexible panels. A single piston is enough for small, stiff pieces and is quicker to place. Rated capacities are given in tonnes, from around 0.1 tonnes upward, and that figure holds only on the surface the manufacturer specifies, so a rough or porous material never reaches the nominal value. For other lifting equipment there are ratchet hoists and spring balancers.
