Timing belts for slip-free synchronous drive systems
A timing belt transfers torque through moulded teeth that mesh with a matching pulley, so the drive stays in phase under load and nothing slips. That makes it the right choice for camshaft drives, positioning axes, pumps and any machine where the driven shaft has to keep a fixed relationship to the driving one.
Selection starts with three numbers: tooth pitch, belt width and total length, all of which must match the pulleys already fitted. Curvilinear tooth profiles carry more load per millimetre of width than classic trapezoidal ones, and low-noise profiles cut whine on high-speed drives.
Check the operating temperature, exposure to oil and the required service life before settling on a compound. Where the drive tolerates a little slip and cheaper maintenance is the priority, a V belt is often the better answer, and the wider belts range covers flat and variable-speed types as well. Measure the worn belt before ordering: the pitch code stamped on the back gives profile and length directly.
